The 4 Things You Should Know About Your Period

  • How well do you know your period? For many of us, the last time we were formally taught about it was in elementary school amidst lots of giggling and blushing. Of course, you may have supplemented your learning with reading "Are You There God? It's Me Margaret" a few times to really get the gist of things (or was that just me?).

I view the menstrual cycle as the fifth vital sign because it paints a general picture of your hormonal health. As a Naturopathic Doctor, I take the information you learned back in your high school health class (from well meaning sources), and explain the difference between COMMON and HEALTHY.

So what does a healthy period look like anyway?

FOUR SIGNS OF A HEALTHY PERIOD

healthy period

CYCLE LENGTH

A typical cycle occurs between 21 - 35 days. Keep in mind that Day 1 is the heaviest day of your period. Many women think that once spotting begins, their period has started - that's not the case!

CYCLE DURATION

Bleeding should occur between 2 - 7 days. Day 1 and 2 are usually the heavier days, and the flow will taper off. If you’re experiencing a heavy flow throughout, or a period that is longer than the normal - something is not in balance!

VOLUME

Keeping track of blood loss can be difficult, but it you find yourself changing pads and tampons frequently - like every 2 hours (!), you may have an iron deficiency.

SYMPTOMS

None.

WAIT A SECOND...

Let's unpack that last point. At some point in our lives, we've been told that pain and cramping is a normal part of the menstrual cycle. Yet, something that is so common to many women - isn't actually part of a healthy period!

REPEAT: YOUR PERIOD SHOULD NOT BE PAINFUL!!!

We know that women are badass - but it's hard to feel that way when we're in fetal position and our pain isn't taken seriously. Most of the time, we're constantly reminded that pain is normal (spoiler: it's not), it's just in our head (spoiler: nope), and it'll go away (spoiler: it usually comes back).

I believe you. I believe you experience pain. And I believe you can have a healthier period.

WHAT ELSE ISN'T PART OF A HEALTHY PERIOD?

  • Heavy periods
  • No bleeding
  • PMS or PMDD
  • No ovulation
  • Endometriosis
  • Irregular bleeding

WHO I AM & HOW  I CAN HELP!

I can make your period work for you, not against you!

My name is Alexsia, and not only do I always have a spare tampon for my menstruating friends, I help them understand what a healthy period is! When I experienced my first period, I was wearing beige pants (Murphy's Law at it's finest) and didn't tell my mom for TWO days! I knew that it would eventually happen, but I was scared and nervous.

Today, I spend my time working with women of all ages, and encourage them to invest time and energy into their health so they too can finally experience a healthy period. I believe in the "keep it simple" principle, and use tools like nutrition and lifestyle techniques to get us to our goal.
