Current recommendations for methylated folate use in pregnancy are largely based on speculation rather than solid scientific evidence. Folic acid has more research in helping to prevent neural tube defects.
Vegetarians and vegans should consider testing ferritin, vitamin B12 and vitamin D during the preconception period or early in the first trimester.
With some of these nutrients, food may not help to fix a deficiency. Supplementation may do the trick. Especially when someone is simultaneously experiencing nausea and vomiting.
